IBAEM Conference at The Hague

October 17, 2013

We look forward to seeing familiar faces and meeting others for the first time at the IBAEM conference in the Hague next week!

We will have a record 7 staff members attending the event, all fully equipped with laptops, smartphones, and iPads, so please feel free to bring us all your ManageBac questions. We’re happy to do on-the spot troubleshooting and resolve any lingering issues.

If you don’t have any questions, stop by and say hello anyway! We’ll update you on all our latest developments, including:

  • Our timeline of releases for MYP Next Chapter,
  • Our iOS applications for Diploma and Middle Years,
  • The launch of our online admissions platform OpenApply, and
  • The upcoming release of our international school information system iSIS.

If your school is located near the Hague, we are also available for onsite visits in the week following the conference. See you all soon!

Friday Feature: Observer Permission Level

October 11, 2013

If your administrators have been using ManageBac to put together documents for authorization or accreditation visits, i.e. exporting all unit plans into PDF — a long process! — you may want to consider providing direct access to ManageBac instead.

Several months ago, we deployed an Observer permission level. This user has read-only access to browse through unit plans, curriculum, and assessment tasks. This account type is intended for site visitors, accreditation teams or external consultants.

Click on the Users tab and Add new user to begin. Under Type,  select Observer.

Observer Permission Level

Users with an Observer permission level do not have access to any student information. When they login, only curriculum information is available.

Observers are free to click through all sections of units and generate PDF planners, but please note they do not have the ability to Edit units.

Uploading Standards to ManageBac

October 2, 2013

If you follow local, state, or national standards, or have developed your own standards for teachers, and would like them available on ManageBac, please contact our support team. We will custom-build standards into the system for you, so that teachers may use them when planning their units.

For the Diploma Programme, uploaded standards will be available for teachers to choose from under the Backward Planning tab of the unit planner. (DP unit plans must first be enabled under Settings > General.)

Here is an example showing the English Common Core State Standards:

DP Unit Planner Standards

For the Middle Years Programme, the standards are also available under the Backward Planning tab of the unit planner.

MYP Unit Planner Standards

For the Primary Years Programme, the standards are uploaded under Scope & Sequence. While we build in the IB Scope & Sequence by default, many schools prefer to use their local standards instead.

For example, Texas state standards, known as TEKS (Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills) have been built into the account shown below. When planning their units, teachers at this school can easily select from available built-in TEKS.

PYP Unit Planner

Selected standards can later be filtered and analyzed for coverage and balance in your school curriculum.

If you’d like standards built into your system, our turnaround time is 1-2 days for the following commonly used standards:

  • Common Core State Standards
  • Next Generation Sunshine State Standards (Florida)
  • Indiana State Standards
  • Minnesota State Standards
  • Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills
  • AERO Standards

Don’t see your standards listed? ManageBac Support is happy to help custom-build them for you. Please anticipate a 1- 2 week turnaround time.

Once uploaded, all standards are easily accessible and editable under the Settings tab of your account.

From the Support Desk: Archiving C&S Activities

September 6, 2013

Many coordinators have started the new year only to discover that the C&S activities from last year have moved up along with the students. If you’re hoping to wipe the work clean, but save it for future reference, archiving is the easiest and fastest way to let students start the year with a blank slate.

Click on the IB Year Group > Overview tab to begin. Next, click Edit Group Settings.

C&S Overview

On the righthand side of the page, click Archive Activities Now. Don’t worry, it doesn’t archive the activities immediately. Instead, the system will prompt you to select a date. All activities in this year group that were held on or before this date will be archived.

Archive

Now click on the C&S tab to view your clean student roster. Please note that the progress indicators (the flags) are still live, but can be reset via the link on the righthand side.

Our full tutorial on this is also available in our support center here, where coordinators can find other answers to commonly asked questions.

Friday Features Update: Better Calendars, Archiving Teachers Now Live

August 16, 2013

We are happy to release two improvements this week that hopefully make life a little easier.

1) Consolidated Calendar Events
To add an all-school event to the ManageBac calendar, you must create the event in multiple year groups. In the past, this led to disorganized, stacked displays. For example:

Screen Shot 2013-08-24 at 10.27.24 AM

Now we neatly stack events and deadlines with the same name and class type, so that the calendar now looks like this:

Screen Shot 2013-08-24 at 10.29.06 AM

To see the full list of events, users can click on the down arrow. School calendars are now restored to a clean layout.

2) Archiving Teachers
Teachers come and go, but schools want to retain their work on ManageBac. To archive teachers that have left your school, please navigate to Users > Teachers & Advisors. Select a teacher and then click the Archive Advisor button in the top right, under the teacher photo.

Screen Shot 2013-08-24 at 10.33.04 AM

Archiving a teacher prevents the teacher from logging in to access their ManageBac account, but keeps their work available on ManageBac.
